SHIPPING: Soren is unlikely to harbor any romantic feelings for anyone. He is very selective of his company and is slow to warm to others. That said, if you want him to break your character's heart, I'm yours. Given the nature of the game and certain developments, Soren will have plenty of sex without romantic feelings involved. AND LET'S BE REAL... I probably ship Soren with your character in some way.

TAG STYLE: Preference for prose but will match. I also have a hard time responding when my tag partner branches dialogue/actions into two separate things as if they are happening simultaneously, so please try to avoid doing that with me. It makes so much more sense to me when whole thing flows and all the dialogue happening in one tag is said before the next tag with no interruption. There are certain exceptions, such as when characters are texting or when a scene is wrapping up and changing and you need one last finalizing description/response, but limiting this sort of thing is appreciated.

Here is a wiki article on the game that contains a plot summary; just about anything Ike has gone through, Soren was there with him. The next article I'm linking is about Soren's history. If you intend to play FE 9/10 and want to dodge spoilers, ~~it's hopeless; you're on the internet~~ you're probably not reading this application, but as an extra courtesy I will warn that Soren is a walking spoiler warning.
CRAU — Duplicity
Was conscripted into the L.I.E.S. Program of Duplicity and forced to live as a Submissive, which meant that he was part of the lower, subservient caste system that the city upholds and needed to rely upon a Dominant for even basic needs. Characters were tested for something called the "deceit gene" and expected to have lots of sex to that end; if they did not, they faced consequences, such as brainwashing or corrective discipline. Soren experienced a broad loss of agency, had his basic dignity trampled upon frequently, was drugged numerous times, kidnapped, forced into arrangements he did not consent to, and sometimes had sex against his will. He experienced the loss of his best friend and the gaining of a new one, allowing for a bit of personal growth in the human relations department. His sexuality has been tapped into, so he's acclimatized to having casual sex with others, something he likely wouldn't have done in his canon due to his reclusive and fastidious nature. However, he has some brand new emotional baggage to go with.

PERSONALITY:
His world revolves around Ike, son of Greil and new commander of his titular mercenary company, the Greil Mercenaries. Trace Soren's motivations and they will lead you back to him. Ike's simple act of kindness as a young boy saved him from death, but it was the first time anyone had cared about him, much less spoken to him as a person and not a loathsome creature. Since then, he has devoted himself to him. Most of his meaning, his life's purpose, is invested in Ike. I would argue that this sort of single-minded devotion is even unhealthy, which will be touched upon later in the CRAU portion of the app. That said, his unwavering loyalty is a firm choice he made for himself and he forges his own path in life with utmost determination.

Before then, he truly had nothing but hardship, knew nothing save scorn and soon magic. His childhood deprivation of warmth deeply impacted the personality that manifests today. His early years had drilled into him that the only way others would tolerate him was if he could benefit them. It also instilled quite a bit of cynicism into him that flourishes today. This leads him to always be suspicious of motives; he sees the potential for awfulness before he sees potential for goodness.

However brutal his reality was, it did lend its hand in fostering cleverness and resourcefulness. From a young age, he needed to figure out how to survive on his own. This is likely a huge contributing factor to how perceptive he is about other people and their intentions, barring the possible effects of harboring laguz blood (having an "animal's intuition", in other words). As he is now, one of Soren's most notable attributes is his calculating mind, which may be a natural talent of his aided by his experiences. Not only did his circumstances as a homeless orphan groom a worldly shrewdness into him, but before he was left to survive like a feral child on the outskirts, he had learned how to read while being taught magic from the old sage who bought him from his caretaker, who neglected him and cursed his baleful existence. His perspicacity does not stem from worldliness alone, but also the knowledge that can be gleaned from books and a teacher.

Those two caretakers bred different characteristics into him. The woman who "raised" him until he was about four never once extended any warmth to him. Neither did the sage. To them, he was either a beast of burden or a repository for endangered knowledge. Soren himself can illustrate the effects of his upbringing in his support conversation with Ike:

"The woman who raised me was not my birth mother. And she wasn't all that fond of me, anyway... My earliest memories are of her saying, "Why me? The world isn't fair!" or "Stay away from me, child!" No love. No affection. She took care of me out of some sense of duty that she didn't really possess.

When I was about four, a nearby sage came by and asked to take me in. He said I possessed rare magical talent. I remember the day clearly. My caretaker was delighted to give me up. In fact, she seemed almost delirious with pleasure. Smiling like a madwoman as she handed me over... The sage even gave her gold as compensation. Not that it was necessary.

The sage was old, and knew that death would soon come for him. His only goal was to teach his art to an apprentice. As time was short, he put me through terribly rigorous magic training. We worked day and night, without cease. I didn't even have time to think about who I really was. But it was still a better life than I had ever known."

Soren mentions that he was never able to consider who he was. This is true; his own personhood is poorly developed. He never had what most children do: a loving and supportive environment to grow up in. And upon reaching civilization, both races rejected him: one violently, the other coldly. He is out of touch with his own feelings, having learned that they don't matter to anyone, but on the other hand, he demonstrates that he feels — a great deal, and with intensity. Soren is actually quite sensitive and has an inner current flowing with complex thoughts and repressed emotions. Through the events of Path of Radiance, he wages an inner battle of self-discovery that you can follow the trail of throughout each chapter, such as his bitter outburst at Gallia and at Port Toha; him hiding below decks when the dragons of Goldoa are present; when he is lost in depressing thoughts after they make it into Begnion. Ike's support conversation, as well as Stefan's, provides you with hints that illuminate the reason for his instability: he was insecure about who he was, where he truly belonged.

Being emotionally underdeveloped and glacially slow to trust, Soren does not readily attach himself to others, even after the events of the Mad King's War. If that isn't enough to make him unapproachable, he is not afraid to use severe, even scathing language when necessary. He is brutally honest and won't sugar-coat his observations. While this does manifest as a positive trait to those who value unfettered opinions, it often gets him flack and makes him come across as rather inconsiderate, and at worst unscrupulous. He is, however, and especially at Ike's urging, working on deploying more tact, especially when it would benefit him and his company to do so. Though he's still a little cold, he has cracked out of his shell a bit more since the war. He's calmed down the brunt of his turmoil since then. In his own way, he strengthened the relationships between himself and the other Greil Mercenaries, the results of which we can see in the sequel when other characters talk to each other about how Soren's opened up. This quote from Ranulf highlights how he used to be and how he's developed: "He still doesn’t say much, but he’s a lot more at ease these days. He used to be completely closed off, rejecting anyone who tried to get close. Like he’d lock himself away, all alone in his own little world."

Duplicity was both helpful and detrimental to his development. It did not improve his outlook on humanity. It reminded him how unstable life can be, opened up his mind to the prospect of multiverses, and that his place by Ike's side is not fixed by any means. There is a bit of existentialism mixed into that bag and plenty of anxiety and hopelessness to go with that. However, this presented him a rare opportunity to be in a world that did not even recognize what a beorc, laguz, or a branded was, rendering the circumstances of his birth meaningless to others. After a turbulent start, he eventually grew close enough to another person, enough to be able to call him a friend. This is a tremendous step for Soren in navigating human relationships. Before, the word 'friend' could only be reserved for Ike. He's learning to be able to trust and care about someone other than him.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

➤ Magic: Soren is a mage of considerable power.

Tomes: Like other mages/sages in the franchise, Soren can wield spellbooks universally referred to as 'tomes' to create strong forces of magic with which to decimate foes. There are different kinds, and they fall under three basic types: light, dark, and anima. Soren wields anima. He is most adept at wind magic, but is also handy with both thunder and fire as well.

Staves: Soren can also channel his magical abilities into the use of staves, a weapon type that is mostly support-based. They can perform three major functions, most often that of healing, but can also inflict enemies with status conditions or help bolster an ally depending on the type of staff being used.

➤ Tactical Ingenuity: As both the staff officer and strategist of the Greil Mercenaries, and soon the Crimean Army, Soren has proved himself capable of not only managing and preparing a group of soldiers for battle, but guiding their moves with polished efficiency. He is cunning, clever, and perceptive.
